Hepatitis B Core Antibodies (Anti-HBc Total)

The Anti-HBc Total test detects antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen to identify past or ongoing infection.
1 parameters 1 Days Blood No

About Test

The Hepatitis B Core Antibodies (Anti-HBc Total) test detects antibodies produced against the core protein of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It helps determine whether a person has been exposed to the virus in the past or has an ongoing infection. This test measures total Anti-HBc antibodies, which include both IgM and IgG types. IgM antibodies appear early in infection and indicate recent or acute infection, while IgG antibodies persist for life and indicate past exposure. Unlike HBsAg or Anti-HBs tests, Anti-HBc helps identify previous exposure even if the infection has resolved. It is commonly used as part of a complete hepatitis B profile to understand infection history and immune status.

Why This Test

This test is used to determine previous exposure to hepatitis B, identify ongoing infection, and assist in interpreting hepatitis B profile results.

Who Should Take

This test is recommended for individuals undergoing hepatitis B screening, those with abnormal liver tests, or those with positive HBsAg or Anti-HBs results.

Preparation

Prerequisites: Fasting is not required. Best Time to Get Tested: Can be done at any time of the day. Cautions: Inform your doctor about previous hepatitis infection or vaccination history.
