The Erythropoietin (EPO) test measures the level of erythropoietin hormone in the blood. Erythropoietin is primarily produced by the kidneys and plays a key role in stimulating the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. When oxygen levels in the body are low, the kidneys release more EPO to increase red blood cell production.
